If someone hits our trash can and damages their car and then files a claim against us, does our deductible apply that we have to pay up to the first $1000 or does it not apply in this situation.

Most likely your $1000 deductible is a collision/comprehensive deductible and not a liability deductible. As such, it would not apply.

First, even if you were at fault for a collision between someone's auto and your trash can, it would not result in a claim against your auto insurance policy.

Second, if you were liable for the damages to another person's auto in this situation, it would be a negligence claim against the personal liability coverage under your homeowner's policy, and there should be no deductible under that coverage. Deductibles normally apply to first-party claims, not third-party claims
