I was recently out on an adjuster appointment with Allstate and the adjuster told the homeowner that even though about 50% of the roof was damaged they would not buy the entire thing...She said they were going to pay for the entire right slope of the roof to be replaced. The entire front porch would be done as well BUT the left 10-15 shingles that need replaced, we were to take them from the right side of the roof . As a contractor I know that that is NOT ok. Once the seal stip is broken and dirt/debris/granules etc get under there the tab will not seal again.it can lay back down in its place yes but not seal without a bead of calking and as a contractor I cannot warranty the work where that is done. By those shingles being damaged the integrity, functionality, and longevity of the roof is seriously effected . I just don't get why Allstate is doing this to this poor old lady. She is so worried and stressed out . I am trying so hard to help out and frankly it pisses me off that they denied the one slope You can see both slopes from the street and I thought they had to match it. Reasonable appearance right? also she said that in their Repairability test she lifted the shingle tab to a 90 degree angle and it passed. I did not see yhis but I don't buy it. We are trying to get another seasoned adjuster to come out but nothing is happening . I've also done my allstate research and they are ranked the #1 worst insurance company in America with a 48% customer DIS-satisfactory rate.

I'm not clear about that movement thing as you seen to indicate that they want to move some existing shingles. If 1/2 the roof is damaged, where are they moving these shingles from? The damaged section? That does not make sense as they are damaged and could then only be moved to a good section... which would not be needed. Only thing I can figure is that they are replacing an entire section and feel that a few of the shingles in that section are still good so they want them moved to another damaged section. I've never heard of reusing installed shingles. If this is what they want to do I'd certainly have the home owner speak to a supervisor and also file a complaint with the states Dept of Insurance.
As far as matching, no they don't need to match shingles. The polices does not require this when it comes to damage to the dwelling. The shingles will wear and look the same in the matter of a few years. If they replace the damaged shingles then they are abiding by the terms of the policy. She can press the issue and perhaps they will do this but this is something that happens all of the time and I've not seen matching as being a requirement.

This sounds completely goofy to me. Shingles, as the OP states, are not reusable items. They are installed once, and if damaged to the point that the seal is no longer intact, must be replaced.
I would suggest filing a complaint immediately with the state Dept of Insurance.

When it comes to the "matching" issue, it may depend not only on the policy but also the state where the property is located. I can tell you that here in Florida that may be a good argument but if in NJ, maybe not so much.
As for the comment:
The shingles will wear and look the same in the matter of a few years.
That would only potentially be true if you are able to get an exact replacement of the shingle that is installed on the roof.
I hate to hear these types of stories and truly do hope you are able to help this lady put her home back to it's pre-loss condition.
