So just bought a new condo and started the demo of the kitchen to put a new one in. Contractor sees mold along drywall/subfloor, pulls all of that back to see water seeping through the brick exterior wall, Washington, D.C. just finished about a week of heavy rain. While they are seeming to take responsibility since it's coming from a common element, how far does that responsibility go? This is about an 8 foot stretch of a total 30 foot outside wall, and my contractor (and I agree) feels that there is no way we got lucky and this is the only part of the outside wall leaking. Does the condo have responsibility to check the entire wall, knowing that that might mean removing drywall in other rooms/units? What about if this ultimately requires them ripping up some hardwood floors along, do they have to replace those since it was their problem that caused it to have to be taken up? Obviously I can't move in either as planned, do they pay displacement? All of this is new to me and I'm a little overwhelmed with my "wonderful new home"!
