Hi! Greta,
Sometimes it is true but not always. But it is hard to determine which one is true and which one is fake. There are fraud-racketeers who team up with phony witnesses and fake attorneys to cheat you. Try to apply the following tips if you face any such incidents
#inform the police immediately after the accident
#note every minute detail of the other car involved
#try to carry a disposable camera with you and take snaps of the accident site. It will help you to establish the extent of the damages.
#contact your insurance company, right after the accident
#inform your insurance farm if you think the other party is suspicious
I think these tips will be helpful for you.
Take care and drive safe. :)

Yes its quite true!
Frauds have various shapes and colors through the recent times. Con Artists are operating in larger and more powerful platforms. The magnitude and type of these scams are also varying with time. I have heard of such events where preplanned accidents have been enacted with such accuracy and effect, as to offer no hints or conclusions for the cops!
Hope you never come across one such event,
Evan

Auto accidents can definitely be fraudulent. This brings to mind a recent news story (seen around the country), where a couple needed to get some quick cash, so they decided to total their own vehicle by smashing it into a tree and reporting the claim to the insurance company for the money.
One problem.....they videotaped the entire incident. The husband can be seen driving the minivan towards a tree, then bailing out before it strikes the tree. The first strike didn't do a good enough job on the van, so they did it again...and again. All on tape. A relative that was present got a case of the "guilts" and turned the tape over to the police, who presented it to the insurance company. The couple was brought up on fraud charges, I believe.

They had a big scam going on in a town near us involving accident scams.
It seems that cars would double up and pull in front of you where you had to hit them, then the other car would be a "witness" to the accident. Of course the driver of the other car had made up all sorts of injuries, and sued. This went on for quite a while before they caught numerous people.
It got so bad, they were telling others to be sure and leave room for others in front of and behind you
About 5 years ago, some jerk tried pulling one on my mom. She had gone to the grocery store, parked, got out and went in.The next day, a policeman was knocking at our door saying she hit someones car in the lot, did massive damage to the engine, etc.
Well, the policeman looked at her car and couldn't see anything and gave us the address of the other guy. My husband went over ther, looked under his hood and determined he was trying to pull a fast one. This guy had a pick up, we had a Taurus, and he claimed when she pulled into the parking space she hit his truck so hard, it caused the engine damage! We took picutres and called our agent and his- I knew his agent, and told them of the fraud he was trying to do- needless to say everything was dropped..Pictures tell a thousand words!!..KAren by the way- he had had previous damage done to his engine a long time ago, and I guess was trying to get a new one!!
