Redoing my auto insurance through State Farm in PA. I am increasing my uninsured and underinsured coverage to $250,000 for each individual and $500,000 for each accident (I am doing this on both of the cars my wife and I own) and my agent advised me to "stack" the coverages. As I understand it that would essentially allow me to double each coverage ($500,000 individual and $1,000,000 for each accident) because I would be able to use the coverage from each car if I needed. The problem for me is the cost is so high and I already have what State Farm calls "Q" coverage for a million $ to pay for medical expenses and medically related costs in case of a debilitating accident, so I view this "stacking" as almost a double coverage I don't really need. I want to be covered in case of a debilitating accident (my wife does a good bit of driving for her job and we really depend on two salaries to pay for our living exspenses) but I feel this is overkill. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm with you Frank I think you are more than covered....if the stacking increases the rate significantly I'd let it go as well...

it would increase my rate by about $128/year for both cars. It is by far the most expensive "extra". For example the Q coverage is only around $44/year for both cars and that is for $1,000,000 in coverage.

Frank I don't work for state farm, so I do not know what this ''Q" coverage is for, I'll try and find it on the net...to see in what cases/claims this kicks in...but honestly 128.00 per year, that's only little more than five buck a car a month right? Not too bad at all...Let me see if I can find something out about this 'q' thing or if you know for sure who and what it covers let us know....it could be that they are mutually exclusive.... :?

q coverage is for us (family) in case of any debilitating accident it would help pay medical expenses not covered by automobile insurance and any medically related coverages. For instance to equip a van or a house in case an accident leaves someone a para- or a quadrapalegic. Thanks for your help Lori

Frank I can't find this coverage on their web site, do you know what the ''q'' stands for?

Hi Frank,
If your State Farm policy doubles the coverage on the UM coverage and price is a factor, why don't you decrease the coverage amounts by half and save yourself a little money that way. Especially, if you have that "Q" coverage, which I've never heard of, either.
