OLYMPIA -- A bill that would give the state Insurance Commissioner power to review rates in the individual health insurance market passed the Senate today on a 31-18 vote.
Supporters of Senate Bill 5261 said it provides needed transparency for the public which has seen rates climb by as much as 40 percent in the past year.
The bill authorizes the Insurance Commissioner to review rates and determine if they are justified.
Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, said with the increases, people are finding health insurance to be unaffordable.
