It was suggested at the Manulife's annual meeting that the major financial institutions should be able to combine as they and the market see fit, without government involvement beyond what is needed to preserve domestic competition.
U.S. insurance net income increased to $158 million Cdn from $135 million and profits from U.S. wealth management grew to $255 million from $204 million.
