A.M. Best Company announced that American Family Insurance''s Teen Safe Driving Program has received the 2008 E-Fusion Award. The voluntary program provides parents with feedback regarding their teen''s driving habits by using a mobile video device and online notification.
Because teenagers are 10 times more likely to have an auto accident than adults, the program aims to help parents teach their teens better driving habits. American Family partnered with DriveCam Inc. to create an onboard event recorder to help capture risky driving behavior. A simple online application allows parents to review video, track behavior and advise their teens. While American Family provides the equipment for the Teen Safe Driver Program they cannot view any of the video recorded.
Since the program began, risky driving habits have declined by 65% among users.
The judges for the E-Fusion Award said their decision was based on the program''s use of advanced technology, sophistication and efficacy. The judges also believed that American Family Insurance was deserving of the award because they promoted a program that was socially aware and addressed a serious problem facing millions of drivers and their parents.
"This is a tremendous honor for American Family and great recognition of the value this program provides to parents and young drivers," expressed William B. Westrate, American Family''s vice president of personal lines.
Additional finalists included "F3 Insurance Quoting," by Progressive Insurance and Allied Insurance North America for their "mySocrates" system.
