My neighbor is a local independent Allstate broker has an office close by, he would like me to talk to him before going to talk to Aflac looking for a career change after 30 plus years with the Federal Government. Any suggestions on how to get started in the insurance business?

You start by becoming a licensed agent. Do you want to be involved in life and health insurance or property and casualty insurance, or both?
AFLAC and Allstate do not really compete against one another, although they may have a few similar L&H products available to the public. AFLAC has no involvement in property and casualty insurance whatsoever.
What exactly are you looking for? Something to keep you busy on a part time basis, or a full time career? AFLAC doesn't want part timers, and Allstate would prefer to have only career agents. But you could work on a part time basis in your neighbor's agency.
There are hundreds of companies to work with or for. Some 2600 P&C insurers and more than 1200 L&H insurers in America alone.
