I am really sick lately and my Doctor has recommended that I should go on disability leave. All that scaring are the paperwork involved and how much of my salary I should expect back from SDI is also a matter of concern. Is it hard to get a payout? How long would I have to wait? :(

If you are in California, call California state employment department. For other states you can call an equivalent state agency for help. You will get all the required forms from these people.

Regarding how much of your salary you will get back, it depends on what you have insured, how much you have insured, duration of policy, what premium you are paying and such other factors. Your predisability income is also considered.

When filing the claim, make sure that your medical papers supports your claim. You may have to explain your doctors recommendations in elaborate terms.

the salary you get back depends on how much you have insured yourself against your bad health......
try to talk with your company's manager and see if they can understand your problem and give you a genuine and official leave

Arnold, what state are you from? It is hard to tell by your question how to answer you because there is just not enough information there, please provide more detail so that someone can come along and help you out. Please be as detailed about the situation as possible. SDI will depend on the wage that you had through out your life time, you can go on ssa.gov and get their contact information there, I get a yearly statement that shows how much I paid in, how much I would be paid if i was disabled right now and how much I will get during normal retirement. You may want to visit the social security website and get their contact information there and call them to see what they have to say. There is also SSI, which kicks in to cover the shortage if the wage you made is not enough. I am not sure how they come up with their calculations.

As far as how long it takes, I have seen people around here file and wait a very long time, I know it is alot of paperwork and they examine and re-examine, people around here usually end up getting an attorney to fight it for them.

Does your employer have a disability plan in place, if so, do you contribute or participate, is it short term and/or longterm disability? Please give more information so that someone can come along and help you out. take care, hope this helps.
