I wanna bring a pit bull in our family. What kind of coverage do I look for? Are such dogs covered under HO insurance? If my HO insurance won't cover it, what should I do?

Many HO policies are now going to exclude liability coverage on certain dogs. Also, many insurance companies are not even going to write a policy if they know certain dogs are in the home.
I'd consult an agent who knows which carriers offer what coverage for these dogs.

So, you mean to say that there are a few more dogs that would fall under such high-risk category for an insurance carrier. Can you list a few more species so that it becomes easier for us to know when to consult an agent.

Insurers need to pay quite a high amount every year towards claims arising out of dog bites. If your pet dog is a harmless Chihuahua without any teeth, then the insurer won't really mind it. On the other hand, if you own a Pit bull or say a wolf hybrid then you might find it a bit difficult to get it covered. Even when you may persuade a carrier, you might see frequent rate hikes.

I've not see a list for many years now so I don't recall what breeds were on it. From what I remember it contained about 6 or so different ones. I know Pit Bulls were on the list.

According to insure.com (http://www.insure.com/articles/homeinsurance/dog-owners.html), these are the breeds insurers most commonly worry about:
Many have added Cocker Spaniels to the list (nasty little buggers they can be).

We all need to understand the nature of risks that are threatening the insurance industry at present. In the recent past, dog bites have caused the P&C industry to spend around $300 million. The home insurance rates are bound to increase with each riskier dog.

As regards InsTeacher's list, the first time your dog, if not an active member of the list, bites someone, it will be added to the list that applies to your policy -- Chihuahua, dachshund, shitzu, doesn't matter.
