I have this vacant home in Florida which I'd visit for about twice a month. Do I still need to apply for a vacant home insurance policy?

It's not that you don't need to obtain coverage for your home where you're not residing currently. Even when you'd keep on visiting it once or twice every couple of months, it's worth paying for a home insurance policy for this dwelling.

Yes you'd need insurance, but if you're not residing in your house for over a certain period, the best way to deal with this is to rent it out. The rent will not only fetch your maintenance costs but it would also let you have good insurance rates.

Do the right things at the right time. See to it that your existing policy doesn't expire while the house is vacant. If you're not aware and the coverage expires, then your claim would likely get rejected if any damages are caused.

Remember that you shouldn't be doing one thing. You may have a second home or a dwelling which you're using as a vacation home. If you're to get it covered under vacant home insurance, then you shouldn't rent it out. If you do this, then it would violate your vacant home insurance.

Vacant home insurance is most needed when the home owner resides in a different state where his primary carrier is not licensed. That's the reason the carrier would fail to cover the vacant home.

Check if your vacant home insurance offers any protection from floods and storms. I guess it doesn't cover you from floods. You may apply for the flood insurance offered by the fed govt.
