It would not be covered. Liability insurance is triggered by the vehicle in use. If your not paying a liability premium then you won't get coverage.

Sorry you can not be compensated by and insurance company if you are not paying premium for the vehicle in questions.
Is this a newly acquired vehicle? if so how long have you owned it without insuring it?
Is the child listed on your policy as a driver?
If the vehicle was newly acquired you may have a chance but if it was over 30days no coverage will apply.
You may want to consider purchasing a Personal Umbrella policy since you have a young driver in the household putting your financial stability at risk.

If it's a replacement vehicle then most personal auto policies will extend liability coverage even if the company is not informed (I say most as some carrier might modify this portion of the policy). The 30 day clause applies to comp/coll.
Good thinking!

Ok..I've heard of the 'Umbrella Policy'..but, what exactly is it? Should I get one, for my teen ,when he starts driving? What does it cover?

It's when it's raining and you hold a policy over your head.
An umbrella policy provides excess liability coverage. It's excess over pretty much any liability policy you currently have.
If you have a lot of assets you might want to look into it. If it's just your teen that your worried about, I'd see about increasing your auto liability coverage.

You can't be compensated if the vehicle in question is not named on the policy. If it is a new vehicle there may be a 30 day grace period.

TSCOPE....you said that the 'Umbrella Coverage' is extra converage. Thsi may sound strange, but,..I hope you take this as I'm asking it (cuz I just don't know..LOL). Is 'Collision Coverage' and 'Umbrella Coverage' the same TYPE of coverage? I mean....are they both 'equal' in what they cover?
