I'm not very clear on the question. Is the check made payable just to you? If so, those funds are yours. Has he person who performed the repairs been paid? If not, you own them money.

So you has a hot water leak, your insurance paid for it to be fixed, and now you've got a check from someone as well? Who sent you the check?
was this a case of faulty installation or negilgence by the installer? Id the check from them?

No, this check is headed towards the home owners irrespective of it's worth. Now, it's up to them to decide what they'd like to do with it.
