How do I become heavy truck and off road insurance adjuster

by uncmoose1958 » Fri Nov 20, 2009 02:41 pm

I am out of work and looking for a career in which I have over 30 years knowledge in Parts, Service and Sales in the Heavy Truck and Equipment Industry.

I have worked with adjusters on many occasions and found it very challenging and would love to find out about becoming a Adjuster.

An adjuster would typically investigate a claim, apply insurance and local laws, and make liability determinations. An appraiser is a person who just inspects damaged vehicles. To become an appraiser or adjuster you may need to obtain a license depending on the state where you want to work. This can be done on your own or you might be able to find a job with a company who is willing to train you and help you obtain your license. It's tough to find a job as just an appraiser if you don't already know how to write up damage on a vehicle.

A heavy equipment appraiser is someone who has worked a long time inspecting damaged vehicle and knows enough to write up large machinery. This is usually not a large part of their job, they still make their bread and butter inspecting private passenger vehicles. In order to inspect heavy equipment you'd have to be an appraiser for a long time and perhaps take some classes on the subject.

You may want to call you states Dept of Ins and ask them if a licenses is required in your state to become an adjuster or appraiser.

I agree with T. Although, there are quite a few insurance companies out there that will hire just about anyone to become an appraiser as long as you have a college degree wnd little or no automotive experiance.

An adjuster is far more involved than an appraiser as T pointed out. Rarely do I ever see adjuster positions advertised with "no experiance needed".

I find unless a company is currently looking for someone that they just "file" those resumes. You may want to adjust your resume a little. A few days after you send out the resume, follow up with a short letter.
