where I'm from it depends on whether it is permanently attached to the floor or is a "removable covering".

For my personal dwelling it's covered under the building policy, but for my rental property I have a separate minor contents policy to cover the carpet, curtains and similar.

If it's permanently fixed to the floor (normally the case) I'd say it should come under you home/builidngs cover. Having said that - you really need to have both house and contents cover anyway. I got a pretty rule awakeneing to the realities of needing contents cover a few years ago.

Unless you are sleeping on the floor, wearing rags and sitting on beer crates you NEED both types of cover if you own the place you live in. Pays to do some shopping around though as not all homeowners policies are created equal.

Yes, I'd also believe that it's better to use a separate policy for carpets.

I guess that means if it's 'removable' then it's gonnabe covered under contents. Am I right?

yes, it just depends on what is considered "removable".

in my case if it was tacked or nailed to the floor it was considered a permanent fixture. If it was stapled (who knows whether their carpet is tacked or stapled?) it was considered removable.

I just bit the bullet and took the contents cover - Iw asn't about to go pulling up my carpet to check whether it has tacks or staples!

If it's wall to wall..it's covered under "dwelling" if you can (easily) pick it up and walk out with it, it's "personal property"...think about it this way...if you sold your house, would it go with the house? or would it go with you or be a negotiable item?

Why do you ask? :?
