I recieved a couple of checks for a slab leak I had in my home. They were made out to myself and my mortgage co. There is not a lot of damage but the insurance co came up with about 8000 dollars. I want to do the work myself, but my mortgage co wants contracts with a contractor. before they will release the money. How can I get the money so I can pay to do repairs myself?

Your only recourse is to deal with your mortgage company. Your insurance has a legal obligation to them to protect their interest (put their name on the check). Your mortgage company wants to know that the repairs were done and that they were done correctly. This is what you were paid for so it should really not be an issue.

I'd really like to know the possibilities of your entering in to an agreement with your mortgage co. in this aspect.
Did your mortgage co. rep ever tell you that you can't do the repairs if you're not a professional in this area?

After a long legal battle (9 mos )with my ex whose name is still on the house, I finally have a signed check to forward to the mortgage co. During this time however I have done about half of the work on my own with my own money bc I needed a place to live. I really busted my butt and did a nice job, drywall, paint ect. Will I ever get reimbursed? Now that i have the check I will let a contractor finish. Also how long (year) is the check good?
