Does OSGLI delay checks?

by poopstain252 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 01:23 am

My mom was in the Military and passed away 2 years ago. Me and my brother have both been receiving checks on time until last month when it was 6 days late. This month it just never came in and neither did my brothers which comes in on a different day as my check so count out losing it in the mail you would think. well the People at SGLI keep telling me different stories on when it was sent out and when I should expect a check. Does anyone know if they are usually this bad at giving straight answers!?!?

What explanation did they give for causing this delay? Did they try to establish this as a problem with the mailing service?

They told me that the check must have been lost in the mail. I just found out again today that the second check they sent out last week has also been "lost in the mail" also. This makes it 3 checks lost in the mail within 3 weeks!!! And yes they say that the checks have been mailed out but they must not be getting to my house. I dont know why this is a problem now considering me and my brother have both been getting checks for over 2 years now from SGLI.

Hello, OP. I'm in the Military, myself. You should go to the Military website (SGLI) and enter your mother's name to see if checks are STILL being sent. Was your mother STILL in the service when she passed away? Usually, with SGLI, the Soldier will 'lose' it if he/she gets out of the Military. But..you CAN continue it, paying all of the high premiums yourself.

No My mother was not still in the Military when she passed away but she kept paying for the life insurance because she had cancer and knew she was going to pass away. The checks have been sent for 2 years straight now with no problems and then when Oct. came around they were sent out late and I was told they were having problems and then now they have sent out 4 checks according to the claims director but none of them have made it to my house. They did send out a lost check form in the mail and that made it to my house in 2 days so we know they have the correct address. It just seems a little odd to me. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of something like this happening before or have any suggestions for me because so far everything that I have done has not worked!!

out of interest, can't you just arrange to have payments made directly to your bank account? Avoiids any issues with late/missing payments or "othe cheque is in the mail" situations?

This is how things are most commonly done in other parts of the world.

Usually Government checks are sent 'Direct Deposit'. So...I;m a bit confused why her Life Insurance checks are being mailed. Ya know, GUEST........let me talk to a few people who deal with disbursing Life Insurance checks and I will get back to you. That just seems odd to me. Hang in there..ok?

Just curious, OP. How much was your mom's Life Insurance and how much was she paying for it, AFTER she got out of the Military? How long ago was your mom 'discharged'?

No I have already asked about direct deposit and they do not do it. Bummer!!! I just received s check today in the mail and I was told from Multiple people including the claims director that my check was put in the mail on the 17th and when I checked the postage on the envelope it was dated for the 24th so I am not sure why they would pretty much lie to me on the day it was actually sent out. I just don't get all of the different answers from everyone. Interesting......

My mothers Life insurance was for $250,000 between me and my older Brother. I am not positive how much she was paying a month but I believe it was around 40 dollars a month which seems pretty good. I am not sure how much she paid after she was discharged. My mom was diagnosed with Brain cancer in 2002 and the Army kept her on Medical leave for 4 years so she could get to her 20 years and then they retired her. They treated her very well and she also got to collect on her Social Security as well. It ended up after Retirement she was making more money than when she was on active duty. Kinda funny I think. She worked up at Meps in New Jersey as a councilor after being a recruiter for many many long years!!! If anyone was a recruiter in the past they know how long your days were!!!!!

Gosh!! I'm sorry to hear about your mom. However....I'm glad the Military treated her well. A good friend is a Recruiter...he works ALL THE TME!!LOL Appointments, on the phone alot, etc. Was your mom at Ft. Dix? That's the only base, I can think of, in New Jersey. I just don't understand why it can't be Direct Deposited.....seems crazy. I haven't gotten ahold of my friend, yet, to see if he has any ideas what (maybe?) he can do. I'll let you know as soon as I find out. Usually..when you have $250,000 of SGLI, the Soldier pays $20.00 per month. That's what I was paying until the SGLI went up. Now I have $400,000 SGLI and I pay $27.00 per month. Did you say you DID finally receive a check?
