I LIVE IN FLORIDA, MY EMPLOYER CUT MY HOURS FROM 32 HOURS A WEEK TO 9 HOURS A WEEK, ALL BECAUSE I TOLD THE NEW MANAGER THAT I CAN NOT WORK ALL NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS. I HAVE NOT WORKED ALL NIGHTS OR A WEEKEND IN OVER 2&1/2 YEARS WITH THIS COMPANY, BCAUSE OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES I HAVE.WHEN THE NEW MANAGER CAME ALONG AND THE COMPANY CUT MY HOURS TO 9 HOURS A WEEK I HAD ALREADY BEEN WITH COMPANY FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS. ONE OF THE EMPLOYEE TOLD ME TAHT I AM ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL WITH THE COMPANY? MY QUESTION IS: AM I ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT EVEN THOUGH I STILL WORK FOR THE COMPANY?

I doubt it...if your nine hours a week is more than the umemployment max...

contact your state unemployment office and find out..

Yes you are... but you will need to deduct what you make in a week from the amount Unemployment is paying (i.e. it's almost like working for free).

Example:

$250/week from unemployment
-$100 from work
-----------
$150/week from unemployment and you make $250/week

$250/ week from unemployment

Same amount if you don't work those 9 hours. Of course, your benefits will last longer if you take less money each week and finding a new job might be easier if you can say you are currently employed.

(Just my '2 cents')..it just doesn't seem fair..ya know? People who DO try and work and keep their job can get 'messed over'. I would think this situation is 'circumstances beyond your control'. the OP shouldn't get 'punished' for that.

When I worked as an independent adjuster in FL my employer stopped paying me for 32 hours of work (any time billed over that was paid at a higher rate) and started to pay me just for billed hours. He then stopped giving me very many claims (guy was an ass). I filed for unemployment which then would increase their unemployment taxes. I'm betting he did not know I could file if I was still employed and I'm betting it really ticked him off. The catch was that any money I made by working just reduced the amount I was paid by unemployment. But I still worked as it kept me busy. But not a day went by that I knew I was basically working for free.

WOW!!, TSCOPE.....it's like a 'Catch 22'. That's just horrible. How can you live on 'wages' like that (well..I guess you can't, can you?). I wonder if there is anyone (a Manager or someone) you can talk to about this.

Past tense. Company is no longer in business. Office I worked in made the most money. Took this manager less then a year to run it into the ground. Which in turn killed the company as a whole.

I had my hour cut down to 20HR at 7.25! Next, thing I know the company gave me no hours at all and e-mail stated this

No intention of putting you between a rock and a hard place.

We didn't receive a permit list thus, nothing to do.

I had my car insurance I was force to quite because they are not going to give hours! To get a paycheck so I can drive !

Now, the company is fighting so hard not 2 pay the unemployment :(

I think they SHOULD give you Unemployment. It's THEIR fault for running the business into the ground..not yours!! You have to live on SOMETHING!!

Dear Melikya,

I can very well understand that how Personal responsibilities can force a person to make adjustments with his/ her job.

Blaming your employers on occassion is again not reasonable alltimes, because even they have to manage things and as I understand that no management can always be good for everyone.

As already discussed above, you may get unemployment, but consider some more options in long run.

In case your personal responsibilities will be over soon, then it is okay for you to use unemployment benefits, however, in case they are going to remain there for a longer duration, then consider becoming your own boss. You can work online from the comfort of your home, making use of your office (or other technical skills) as a Freelancer.

You may look for employers those allow their staff to work from home.

In this connection, if you feel that I can help you, feel free to ask me.

Regards !
