Able to switch from unemployment to disability quickly?

Hi, I live in New York, and my father, who is currently collecting unemployment, has recently been diagnosed with Lupus, and is facing double leg amputation. My parents get by on very little, literally budgeted down to the dollar. I know it may sound ridiculous, but they really couldn't afford to miss a payment. Thank you
