I was in my stopped car in a parking garage when the person in front of me quickly began went into reverse (with no signal) to back into a space and scraped my front bumper and license plate with the side of his car. My vehicle has minimal damage that I was planning to fix myself, but his car requires a large repair on his door. He is claiming his vehicle through insurance (and is required to provide my info as well), since it was his fault (because he hit me while I was stationary) but I plan on fixing on my own (<$100) do I need to contact my insurance company? I don't want my rate to go up just because I was hit by another car. Accident occurred in NY but I live in CT. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you have his info, file with his carrier. It shouldn't be your responsibility.

Are you sure the other person and his carrier agrees with your thoughts on fault? If so, you should be able to file directly with his carrier and not have to notify your owner. Of course your policy probably requires this but this is almost never an issue.

I am not sure what the other person told his carrier, but he agrees that he backed into me while I wasn't moving. He was definitely upset and asked why I didn't back up, but I don't think that makes me at fault, right? Is it possible to contact my carrier without actually putting in a claim to discuss the situation? Or is it best to just call his carrier?

Hi coscobbers
You sound like an extremely nice human being. Ideally, since it is not your fault you should call the other person's insurer and turn the claim to them. If you want to get it repaired on your own, you may do so and keep your insurance company informed about the accident. Since, you are not making any claim, this shouldn't raise any premiums. Ami I right tcope?

How about calling the other person and asking him if he had informed his insurance company already. In any case you could then call this company on your own but with in a better informed condition. If the accident has been announced as the other person said, good. If not you can start the process and sea how they react. I would prefere to be proactive and not only to wait if they contact me.
