A roofer just called me and said the IRS has him owing taxes on 6k, an estimate he gave me 2 years ago, I turned in his estimate, insurance sent me a check for $6.000- deposited into my account, with no problem, but 2 years later, IRS is saying my roofer did the work of $6,000, and he didn't do the work and he's getting ready to have to pay taxes on that!!!! Anyway, the check issued to me had my name on it, I do not remember seeing his name at ALL- but I took the check and signed it- bank took it- money is in the bank- roof was reworked to accomodate for awhile, I pocketed the rest for now due to a bitter divorce being left with no money! My roofer is pissed because he didn't get that 6k to fix it but the IRS showing he did, wtf???? I'm so worried about this right now, I can't sleep, I took MY check for damage on MY roof and put it in MY bank- then I thought it was up to me from there to do and go with whomever. I'm so confused- HELP I never meant to hurt anyone and I don't understand why my insurance company billed the work to him, that was never discussed. If his company's name was on the check I received, I either over looked it and just figured I could sign it and see what happens--- it's my money! I had no idea it would be turned in to that dudes income IRS people. So now what?

First, you did nothing wrong. The money is yours to do with what you want. Sure you should fix the roof, but thats beside the point.
As for the check, I doubt your bank would cash it if it was payable to both you and the roofer. That means that the roofer is either lying to try (some way) to force you to give him the job, or some how the information got forwarded to the IRS. I just don't buy it. Ask the roofer to show you the letter he received from the IRS, or just ignore him. Its really not your problem.
What is he looking for you to do for him?

Thank you so much for your honesty and quick reply. I was up all night worried about this, I can honestly say, I am so thankful to hear this news. I have called the insurance company but after reading this, I must say, I am going to back off of the "roofer" and just let him deal with it--- like you said, it's not my problem, he can wheel and deal with the IRS- not me! He gave me an estimate, I turned it in, my insurance cut me a check, whether it had both of us on the check is beyond me, I do not remember that far back, but the bank deposited my check. I'm assuming the insurance company turned the money in on his business as work rendered. He never did the work nor was I told he had to. There was no service order given to me from anyone nor did I sign anything stating I would use that roofer. I'm just worried, I teach school and I'm a single mother- I did repair the roof and will get a new one at a later time, but not now.
Again, thank you!

There is a kind of misinformation it seems, deliberate or otherwise. You do not need to worry about it at all. There is nothing to do here at all except asking your roofer to show some proof of what he demands.

It's between the insurance company (if that is the entitiy that reported revenue for the roofer) and the roofer. Not you.
To the second guy, What to tell the bank? Are they asking something? Is the check made out to you and your contractor? If so you will need him/her to sign in order to cash the check unless your bank will cash it with just your endorsement. If so you should return the overage to the Insurance company or at least notify them. The contractor would be more than happy to charge more I am sure. There may be additional charges, another contractor to fix different damage?

i had my house repaired after water damage. the contractor charged me less than what the insurance company gave me. after he saw my estimate of what i was getting from the insurance company, now hes saying i owe him all the money that my insurance company gave me but i have his estimate. what should i do

Tell him to pound salt. You have a contract with the contractor for "X" amount of dollars. That's what you owe the contractor unless there were change orders....it doesn't matter what the insurance company paid you.
