Hi Brooke and welcome to the forum. In regards to your question:
what education would i need to become an insurance agent?
That depends on what state you live in. Just about every state has signed onto what's called the "Producer Licensing Model Act," or "PLMA." This was part of some federal legislation a few years back that requires that each state "get on the same page" in terms of prelicense education and continuing education. What the heck does this mean to you?
Chances are that you are going to have complete a minimum of 20 hours of education per line of authority you are seeking. For example, if you want to get a "life and health" license, you will need 20 hours for each of those lines of licensure, or 40 hours total. If you wanted to do a single line of authority, you would normally need to complete 20 hours of prelicense education.
In addition, you will have to pass a state test. Depending on the state you live in, there are different testing providers and different exams. As well, you will have to apply and receive authority from the state in which you live. This will entail an application to the state, the payment of fees, fingerprints and criminal background checks.
All of this information can be "tweaked" based on the state where you live. If you could give me that info, I can tell you what you're up against!
