My company used to pay 100% for my family's (wife and daughter) helath insurnace. They have let me know they will not be doing this effective 4-1-10. Can i drop my wife and kid from my company plan coverage and stay on the plan as an individual and then purchase an individual plan for my wife and kid. This will save me around $8000. I live in Texas.

Yes, you can drop your family from your company health-care coverage. Most people do not realize that individual health plans are a lot cheaper than group health insurance. As long as your wife and daughter are healthy, your family would be accepted in any individual health insurance for very cheap. So you just need to shop around and compare quotes and speak with an insurance agent familiar with different healthcare plans.

One other question. Are there any rules stopping me from dropping my family coverage since it is past open enrollement. I would think that my company paying 100% of my coverage when i made my decsion at open enrollment and now they are saying they wont pay any for my family coverage after would qualify as a "qualifying event" Correct?
Any suggestions on how to handle my employer if they try to not let me opt out of my family coverage?

Yes, an employee is entitled to the continuation of benefits or coverage after a "qualifying event" occurs.
