When does insurance become valid? The hour you purchase it, or for the whole day?

Depends on the type of policy. Since this is the auto insurance forum, I'll assume that's what you're referring to.
Auto insurance coverage can start at anytime. It depends on when the agent "bound" the coverage. I'm not sure what you mean by this:
The hour you purchase it, or for the whole day?
What do you mean "the whole day?" Are you thinking about insurance that covers a person for just "one whole day?"

I guess it becomes valid when you get your membership papers, but the coverage actually seems to get activated past it's waiting period. That's when it actually comes into effect.

What? Auto policies do not have "waiting periods." Coverage is either effective or it isn't.
