The car is still covered by the car owners insurance. Generally the insurance remains in effect as long as the driver is not specifically excluded by the insurer or not in contrast to the terms of the policy for any reason. The use of the car by the non-owner generally must be considered to be an occasional use. If the non-owner effectively possess the car as if they owned it, it could be a problem. If this uninsured driver gets a moving violation he will be in trouble. But as long as you are a licensed driver and not excluded from his policy, there should be no problems, you should only be responsible for your own ticket.

Yes, Its called a non owners policy and is designed to cover you for vehicles that you drive that you do not own. It may exclude coverage for vehicle that you have regular access to or that are owned by a household member. Its a policy that is designed for folks that need to prove financial responsibility to their state DMV or BMV so they can get their license reinstated. If you are in Ohio or Washington (possibly other states) you could purchase an FR bond that functions in a similar way only the FR bond follows the driver not the vehicle and does cover owned vehicles while they are operated by the FR bond holder. This would be for a individual that owns several cars that he operates and does not want to insure all of them. It would not cover anyone other that the bond holder while driving his/her vehicles.
