Flood/seepage help

I have been living in my house for 3 years. We received 14 inches of rain in two days in May. My basement and garage received approximately 3 inches of water the second day. We do not live on a flood plain. My sister in law called me and said our homeowners insurance should cover some of the damage although we didn't have flood insurance as this was considered an "act of God" and that she knew of someone personally in her state whose insurance covered this type of problem and they did not have flood insurance. This I believe was a once in my lifetime event and I don't know what to think about filing a claim with my current insurance. FEMA will not help us. Can you give some advise?

Probably not covered, since it was due to rain. Has nothing to do with living in a flood zone, but the standard policy language which excludes water damage from most sources other than pipes that have burst. Even sewer back up that fills your basement with &^%$ is not covered.

Your policy could say something different, so you have to read it to know for sure. Contact your agent or insurance company. They will tell you if it's covered or not.

Yes, it's time that you go through your policy papers once. I'd also agree that our insurers would look for the real reasons behind such damages. It really hasn't got anything to do with your staying in a flood plain, if it's rain water in the end.
