I just turned 18 and my mom is telling me I need to go out and get insurance on my own. How do I know if I’m buying insurance from a fly-by-night insurance company or not?

Every state in the US has some form of regulatory department that would govern insurance companies that do business in your state. These departments can be known as the Department of Insurance, the State Board of Insurance, the Office of Insurance Regulation or something along those lines.

Most of these state departments have developed websites that offer consumers tips on buying auto insurance and what to look out for. In many cases, you can also look up information about the particular agent or insurance company you are dealing with, such as the number of complaints filed against them

If you're concerned about the company, then I would recommend that you choose a company whose name you recognize from their advertising on radio, TV, cable, in the newspaper, or in the Pennysaver. What's wrong with the company that insures Mom's car?
