I was rearended. The other driver’s insurance company accepted liability and appraised my vehicle damage at $550. I got an estimate from an independent body shop which came in at over $1100. As best I can tell, the first appraisal is simply refinishing the bumper cover. The second estimate replaces the cover and some other parts. I don’t plan on fixing the damage just want to be compensated for car’s reduced value. I’m not a mechanic or anything but I crawled under the car and looked behind the bumper and saw bent metal and bolts pushed out of position. I’m afraid that simply refinishing the cover is ignoring damage not plainly visible. Do I have to accept the $550? If the adverse driver’s ins company stands firm, would suing the other driver for the full amount be a waste of time?

Appraisers typically won't crawl under the vehicle to inspect damages as they can allow the show to tear down the vehicle and then reinspect if needed. In your case I understand you won't have it repaired. My recommendation is to call the adjuster or appraiser and let them know this. let them know that there are additional damages and you can submit the repair shops estimate for consideration. You could also offer to take photos of the additional damage and email them to the adjuster.
