What do I ask for when I need information on a policy to see

I am trying to write letters to companies to find out if policies are still active and how much they are worth. What do I say...how do I word it?

Why write letters when you can call a customer service number and get an answer right over the phone. They'll need a social security number and perhaps a date of birth, and you should have your answer very quickly. Much cheaper than the 44 cent stamp.

It would seem easier to talk to them on the phone..true. I think it's a bit safer, too. By contacting them VIA phone, you're not putting all your information on paper and sending it how many states away,..where ANYONE could possibly get into the mail, etc. Hope you understand my point, OP.
