I am thinking of moving to the US, but I am afraid of the costs of disability insurance. My son is autistic (but doesn't require medication) however my wife has a thyroid condition and has to take thyroxine for.
I am used to free health cover, so this is going to be a real culture shock.

yes, yes it will be...health insurance and disability insurance are two separate things  here anyway..Posted: Fri Jun 25, 2010 11:21 pm Post Subject:
Yes it seems as though you are more concerned with health insurance than disability insurance. You could move to a state like NY where all the individual coverage is guaranteed issue no pre-existing conditions exclusions.
There's also group insurance through an employer. Why are you moving? Is it for work? Is health insurance offered? It's going to cost money yes, taxes might be a bit lower here though.

In some states, Washington for example, the state considers all health insurance environments "disability" insurance, and in many foreign countries, health insurance is called disability insurance as well.
Don't confuse it with "disability income" insurance which is what I think you're thinking of.
