Catering insurance?

I live in Atlanta, Ga and I'm opening a catering business. As of now, I cook in clients' homes but I have an event coming up in a few months and the rental hall asked if I have a license & insurance. I have a business licence and thats it. Do I need to take a course in food safety to get the insurance I need? Also what kind of insurance do I need?

As a person involved in the food service industry, you should take a Food Safety Professional/Food Safety Manager course, just on general principles.

Certification as a FSP/FSM is not a prerequisite for liability insurance, nor does having it lower your rate. The type of policy you need is a Caterer's Commercial General Liability policy. A standard policy will provide at least $1,000,000 of aggregate liability coverage (all claims in the policy year).

You may also need to consider a Commercial Property policy as well if you rent equipment, such as a truck, or chafing dishes, plates, glassware, utensils, etc.

Most local brokers will know how to obtain this for you. There are some in every state who specialize in insurance for the food service industry.
