are we entitled to a depreciation check due to my husbands buying the car new and it having little over 20,000 miles on it,

Highly doubtful... depends on the policy you have with your carrier. I've never seen a policy state it will pay this on a 1st party claim. It probably states that they will pay "actual cash value" on a 1st party loss.

Also, a vehicle with 20,000 is hardly "new".

Claiming "diminished value" on a car after an accident is often difficult, but definitely possible. A new car loses about 1/3 of its value after an accident, even if it is repaired to perfect condition. The least you can do is inquire with your insurer about recuperating some of this loss.
