The insurance adjuster contacted me on Tuesday, it is Thursday now. So when should I call the adjuster to follow up on the update?

Some more info might help... such as the type of claim, what the adjuster was going to be doing, basically the status of the claim last Tuesday. If it's a 1 million dollar property loss then it's probably going to take a few days.
But bottom line... if you want to know... call.

You haven't mentioned for how long you're into this settlement process. Have you just begun negotiating? Remember, once your claim goes through an investigation it might take more time than expected.

Sometimes it's really a problem when it goes for further investigation. You never know when it will actually get settled. I've seen people getting fed-up with unanswered queries regarding the status of their claims.

Lets not forget that you are probably one of 3-10 claims an adjuster (depending if they are inside or oudside adjusters) get in a single day.
A two day gap in communication probably means that the adjuster is waiting to get to the car at a shop, valuing the total loss, ordering police reports, contacting other parties, waiting on others to call them back.
wash, rinse, repeat.
These things take time do be done correctly.
