Hello, I payed off an old debt 8 years ago and its still on my credit report, this very day. I need help to get it off my report. I no longer have any paperwort on my old claim. It has long been paid off years ago but yet it haunts me. So, could you please find me a contact representative for Progressive Insurance to clear up this matter, to show I payed the $350.00 debt owed. Thank you.

Under the guidelines of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you can dispute any item on a consumer report directly with the Credit Reporting Agency. You are entitled to one free copy of your credit report with each of the "big 3" (Experian, Transunion, Equifax) once a year, so some of us recommend spacing your free requests to each one separately 4 months apart, since all three generally contain the same information, you will be able to notice changes more frequently without having to pay for the services of others.

If you see something on one or more of your reports, you use their online dispute reporting mechanism to open a dispute on one or more items. It is up to the Reporting Agency to follow through and obtain verification of the debt from the Original Creditor, normally within 30 days. See FCRA Section 611(a)(5)(A). If the disputed item is not verified within that time limit, it must be deleted by the Credit Reporting Agency.

Failure of the Original Creditor to supply the verification can be a separate offense under the FCRA, as is the Credit Reporting Agency's failure to remove an item it cannot verify.

If you have documentation from a creditor that your debt was fully paid at some point in the past, then you can be prepared to submit it if the verification process still shows the debt as owing.

Your online dispute has been ruled "a written request" by the Federal Trade Commission, which oversees enforcement of the FCRA and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). If you fail to obtain results (not the same as failing to obtain the result you were hoping for), you can then file a complaint with the FTC.

If you need additional references ot assistance, you can send me a PM or email, and I'll be happy to share my knowledge.

Am I the only one who looks at this situation and asks: If progressive is going to hold things up on a (I'm assuming) potential car insurance policy for an 8 year old bad debt of 350 bucks, this might speak volumes about what kind of company they truly are? You know, how great they'll be come claim time? I'm sure Flo isn't working in that department.

We've had the likes of Lori, tcope and Insteacher for quite some time now. None of them seemed to have had a very bad impression about Progressive when it came to claims. I'd expect either of them to explain why such a thing may have happened!
