Pain and Suffering Involving Children

While on vacation this summer across the country, our rental van was hit. It contained 2 adults and 6 children at the time - luckily all wearing seatbelts. The van tipped and slid down the freeway crossing all 4 lanes of traffic. Aside from medical bills which are being covered, the main issue we are facing is the emotional trauma by the children - the anxiety of being in another vehicle, the fact that the vacation was tainted as this was only the 2nd day of a 7 day vacation. What can we resonably expect to be compensated for? We were thinking $3-$5k per person. But how do you put a price tag on this? We have NOT retained a laywer yet and are hoping that we won't have to. No offer has been made yet, but I'm wondering what we should expect them to throw at us the first time.

It really depends on the medical bills/injury for each person/child. I've had claims with multiple children in a car. Some kids got $500.00 while others got a couple K.

The insurance company will want to review the medical bills for all and then come back with an offer. Don't be offended by the first offer. If there were no real injuries, they may come back with $500 per kid. If there were no real injuries, I doubt they will offer 3K per kid let alone 5K. Emotional claims for kids were always difficult. I understand it from both sides.
