The only thing that would prevent you from writing your own coverage is a company's policy against "controlled business" (applications for oneself, and members of one's immediate family). Some states have laws that address this, California does not.
So if you have a Life-Only license, feel free to write away, unless you are a captive agent your insurance company prohibits it.

You sure can as long as you are properly licensed in the State in which you write the policy. I did the same for myself.
