the father of my son offered to fix my jeep for me. He couldn't fix it so he sent it to a mechanic without my permission, and the shop refuses to let me have the vehicle without me paying the bill first... am i responsible for this bill if it was brought there without my knowledge?

Nothing like getting confused from the start. :?

I'd say yes. You gave your son's father (????) permission to use the vehicle. As such, you are responsible for what happens to it. Granted, I think you have the right to ask him to pay you back. But good luck with that.

This whole post/situation has fail written all over it.

father of my son = Babies daddy = not husband material.

In any event, I don't see you getting your jeep back without the shop being paid.

Based on the OP's Post......: (original post)

The OP never agreed to have the shop perform any repairs to this automobile.

The Shop may have made an technical error.

I believe in many States only the owner and/or co-owner of an automobile can authorize a Repair.

If the Shop did not get a proper "Repair Authorization" [ in writing or verbal ] form the owner and/or co-owner, the Shop likely can not legally hold your auto for payment. Or even demand payment from you.

You could check your States auto repair regulations [ "Repair Authorization" ] and consult an attorney for guidance as needed.

Or... be nice and work out an agreement with your "Son's Father" to get the repair guy paid. And not drag him into your and your "Son's Father's" personal problems.

Oh man....just curious, what kind of money are we talking about here? What repair was completed on your vehicle?

YOU, gave him your keys, and your vehicle with the understanding it was to be repair. The guy didn't steal it, and apparently he was 'trying' to do you a solid. He said he would fix it for you and he did...he just couldn't do it himself...now there are technicalitys, ie did baby daddy sign a repair authorization? If he did then perhaps he can be held responsible for the bill, but that won't get your jeep back to you any faster. That shop (if they have any sense at all, and appears they do), is not going to let that jeep out of their sight until they have full (guaranteed) payment, (they can file a mechanic lein against it). You can't blame the shop, holding your jeep is their ONLY insurance they will get paid for a job they were asked to do, and they completed the job in good faith, with the understanding they would be paid for the job they did.

Ask yourself this....did the jeep HAVE to get fixed? most likely it did, now it's fixed..just pay the bill and learn a valueable lesson...Some times it's best to take care of things ourselves
