If my ins. comp. in Mass. totals my car and I want to keep it am I required to give it to them in exchange for their check

No... an owner can always keep their vehicle. The insurance company would then deduct the salvage value from their offer. Also, the insurance company _should_ then report this information to the state (that the vehicle is now salvage).

You can keep it and the salvage value gets deducted as mentioned above. I'm sure you're aware of the reason why the insurer has to report this to the state, aren't you?
