I think you should search for those policies in medical information bureau website.You can even contact their insurance agents.

If you have access to their old bank records, you might just find the name of an insurance company and perhaps even a policy number on a cancelled check. Other than that, you can use the Medical Information Bureau's Lost Policy Locator service. There's a $75 fee per person researched.
You might want to try to locate Dad's coverage first. If Mom had a policy, too, it will almost certainly be with the same insurance company. The MIB will not give you a policy number, only information that there was an application made to one or more insurance companies. Then you have to contact the insurance company for more assistance.

Yes correct old colleagues, especially the ones they hangup frequently with and probably confided in them, could be good source of such information.
