I'm guessing knowing you were uninsured had nothing to do with you not wanting to wait for the police? If the person caused the accident why would he lie about you not wanting to wait?
What should i do?
You are "done" after you exchanged contact and insurance information. If you have his info, contact his company and file a claim. If you are contacted by the police, cooperate.
Then you should go out and get insurance.
Look at it this way.. how would you feel if the person that rear ended did not have insurance so you were SOL? Not too nice when it's _you_ who are out.

See, tcope has the best suggestions for you at this juncture. Don't overdo things on your own. It's natural to get in touch with the other party's carrier under such circumstances, and you too need to do the same. If the police appears, you have no other way out but to cooperate.

I think I'll wait for more information. It seems as if we're missing out on some thing. Please keep us updated.

You should have waited for police. Also why were you driving without insurance?
