Will an old insurance company cover an auto windshield just broken?

In most cases, auto insurance is written on an “occurrence” basis, meaning the accident must have occurred during the time you were insured with the company for it to be covered by them.

I thought it wouldn't be covered if reporting of the loss gets delayed and as a result any of the circumstancial evidences get removed. Can such claims be denied due to any other cause?
