Who is the beneficiary? If there is no surviving beneficiary, then the proceeds are payable to the decedent's estate. If there is more than one primary beneficiary, the proceeds are typically paid "per capita" -- equal shares.
If there is a named beneficiary(ies), no one else has a claim against the money, including anyone who paid for the decedent's funeral. The money belongs to the beneficiary(ies), plain and simple. If the beneficiary(ies) is a minor, it can be paid to a trust for the benefit of the child.
Paying for the child's mother's funeral with the child's money is NOT for the benefit of the child, and will not be allowed by the court that supervises the whole affair.
