Coverage without any gaps. HIPAA defines continuous coverage as not having a break in coverage more than 62 days. You could leave one employer's group plan today, and then be hired by another employer with a group plan. If your coverage would start within 62 days of leaving the first employer, you have achieved "continuous" coverage.

In order to preserve one's HIPAA privilege, while waiting for a probationary period to run (typically 90 days, but could be up to 12 months), it may be necessary to continue one's former coverage under the provisions of COBRA. But you only have 60 days following termination from the employer's plan to elect continuation under COBRA. Miss that, and your privilege under HIPAA could also vanish.
