Any guidelines or outlines that might help me understand what it is all about. I am specifically insterested in finding the least expensive courses that might be out there that help you prepare for state licensing in NY.

Generally, when it comes to insurance prelicensing courses, you get what you pay for. CHEAP courses usually mean no live instructor, no one to answer your question at the moment, and no one to clear up any confusion when it comes to the material you are studying.
Having said that, you can find online courses for as little as about $80 and live classroom instruction for as much as $250. New York's insurance laws are somewhat more intricate than those of most other states. You may want to consider the value of a live instructor and passing on your first attempt compared to the cost of retaking your exam two or three times because you chose the cheapest route.

We should always pay for a prelicensing course that shows us through various situations, helps us identify the problems and teaches us the right solutions. Once we go through all the real-life challenges, only then we'd become responsible drivers.

Unfortunately, prelicensing courses are designed to help students pass the licensing exams, not to teach them how to be good at what they do as a licensed agent. It's up to the insurance companies or mentor-agents to do that.
