bodily injury comes from the liability portion of the auto policy and desiged to pay for other people's injuries you are responsible for in an at fault accident, it would not extend to you the driver (you cant sue yourself).
of course you were hit by someone else who was deemed at fault, their liability would pay for you.
you often see split limits of liabilty on a personal auto policy. for example 25/50/25. the first two numbers are for bodily injury; coverage up to $25k for one person, up to $50k for everyone's injuries involved...the third number is property damage (other person's car) in this case it would pay up to $25k for repairs or replacing the car you hit. For better protection, agents encourage you to pay a little extra for higher limits, ie 50/100/50, 100/300/100, 250/500/250, ect. It's a good idea to protect your assets should you cause severe damage.
you would need med pay or personal injury protection added to your auto policy to cover your medical expenses. it would cover you regardless of fault. you can choose 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 and much more. This type coverage also extends to everyone in your car in addition to the liability coverage.
other coverage are available, too. a good one to have is uninsured motorist coverage. If someone hits you and does not have insurance, UM would extend to cover your loss just as if the other guy had coverage. you pick the limits similar to the above split coverage.
it's always good to review your coverage and needs w/ a local agent as he/she has a vested interest in providing you with the right coverage at a price that's competitive. go through the policy and confirm what you have. too many people buy insurance from 800# and .com thinking the are getting "full coverage" and saving money. there's no such thing as "full coverage", policies are not standard and the options available are all customized. always be sure to compare apples and apples when shopping.
