private unemployment insurance

No such thing. The closest is called DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE. But that's very different.

i think calling it insurance is a stretch, it's a tax. federal and state mandated.

Federal "unemployment insurance" is what they call it -- and, yes, it's paid for with FUTA taxes. As with Social Security and Medicare, they like to call FICA contributions "taxes" so the masses believe they cannot be changed.

oh i know what they call it..lol! I a have a staff on payroll and it just went up again Jan 1. but, i still think calling it insurance is a stretch...We're required to pay FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act) and SUTA (State Unemployment Tax Authority)...funny how the word tax is in both those insurance acronyms.

No disagreement from me at all. The real issue is that insurance comes with a contract, and neither UI or SS/MC does. You get what the government is willing to give you at the time you come to get it.

All this perennial CRAP about strengthening Social Security is hogwash so many times over it is no longer even funny. With a nearly $90 TRILLION combined shortfall in funding, there is NO WAY to strengthen Social Security and Medicare -- and unemployment "insurance" . . . every time they extend the benefit period . . . is just another unfunded liability foisted upon the states that compounds the total problem.

Maybe the Egyptians have it right . . . throw out the entire government and let a new crop of idiots see if they can do any better.
