A former male, non-legal spouse of mine in South Carolina died last month. We were still on speaking terms, friends, etc. A mutual friend (whom I thought was to get everything of his) told me that I am the beneficiary listed on his life insurance through his work. I called the insurance company, myself, on 01/14, they would not give me much info. and they sent me a form letter to fill out the deceased info., my info. etc. Would they send me this if I WERE NOT the bene.? I am not for certain if I am the bene., as I do not necessarily believe the mutual friend. What do I do? She is willing to send me a certified copy of his death certificate. BTW: Her husband is the executor.

no they would not. if you weren't at least a partial beneficiary, they wouldn't care about your info.
you sound surprised that you're the beneficiary, but that is more common with life insurance than you think (ex-spouse still being listed). sometimes it is deliberate, especially if children are involved. sometimes it's simply a matter of procrastination where he just never got around to changing it. this is more common with policies that are payroll deducted.
also, understand that a will and a life insurance policy are totally separate things. so your friend might get everything else besides the insurance. I'm assuming there is a will, since an executor is named.

I called the insurance company yesterday. I AM THE BENEFICIARY!
Thank you SO MUCH for your reply, folks.
Have a good one. :)
