I had COBRA subsidy for my medical, dental, vision and prescription plans from my former employer. The subsidy has run out and NOW, the monthly payment is 3 times what it was! I now have cancer and wonder if it would be in my best interest to find another medical plan or just apply for welfare benefits? 401K has been exhausted as I've been unemployed for 15 months! My spouse is now on temporary disability and we are 3 months behind on our mortgage! I have an application in to join AARP since we are both over 50 years old. I do have a pension but withdrawing the whole amount, just doesn't make sense right now. I believe I can request benefits due to my illness but that amount would not cover my medical plan costs.

See, many of us will shop for an individual policy (or policy for the family) and it really helps to lower the premiums. Some of us, who're out of work would even consider a new plan. Such people will consider a group plan when they find a new job.
