my sister in law had her dementia mother living with her and had her life insurance policy changed into her name. the policy was to be for death benefits only. My husband was poa and thought he was still beneficiary upon death of his mother. when she passed away, he submitted the paper work to the funeral home of poa and life insurance policy. we had to put down 3500 and was to be reinbursed with insurance policy, thinking we were beneficiaries. later found out that sister in law had policy changed and now we are out the 3500. what can we do and can we do anything

Only the owner of a life insurance policy has the authority to change the beneficiary on a life insurance policy. If you have evidence that someone else unlawfully made such a change, your state's department of insurance or local district attorney may be able to prosecute the offender. Contact them for assistance or advice. Unfortunately, if the death proceeds have already been paid, you will not have a claim against the insurance company, but only against the party who received the money from the insurance company. If it's gone, good luck.
